The family years

The numerous families and faces of the old school general store, after Leonard’s sale of the store.

1940s – Addition of a residence

A residence was added behind the store in the 1940’s.

Approx. 1944 to pre 1950 – Owned by Bill and Gertie Hade

Photo from approximately 1946. The car/bus/van in the photo was a McCaffertys express delivery vehicle which ran from Toowoomba to Warwick daily, delivering all sorts of parcels and goods. Clare Hade is sitting on the bonnet of the truck.

The owners lived in the cottage nextdoor, “The Commonage”. The shop was later sold to the Mitchell family.

1951 – Allotment subdivision

The allotment was subdivided in 1951 creating separate allotments for the Commonage (cottage nextdoor) and the shop.

I worked there when I was at school. He had a big Great Dane.

Late 1970s to 1980s – Fells Store

When this store was “Fells” in the late 70s and 80s it had the most amazing range of lollies. Loved stopping off there on my bike ride home from Central school.

Michelle Eastwell

…used to work there when the Fells owned it, she made the best pikelets and I still have her recipe.
